More than 500 physicians have signed up with the Ohio medical board to recommend medical marijuana to patients.
The list of Ohio doctors who can recommend medical marijuana grows each month, but it can be difficult to find one nearby or who specializes in a particular medical condition.
Getting a doctor to recommend cannabis is the first step to being able to legally buy and use medical marijuana in Ohio. Physicians have to add patients to the state registry before they can receive their patient ID cards.

The first step in getting medical marijuana in Pennsylvania is getting registered. To register for the medical marijuana program, you must create a profile in the Medical Marijuana Registry. This profile includes basic information such as your legal name, current address, and contact information.
The Enquirer mapped out the doctors' addresses on file with the medical board. The address could be for the physician's home or medical practice – the medical board does not identify where the location is. The map also includes the physician's specialty, if there is one recorded with the state board.
The map will be updated each month as the board certifies more doctors. A searchable list of certified doctors can be found below.
Before applying for a certificate to recommend, doctors have to take two hours of continuing education about the 21 qualifying medical conditions and cannabis, approved by the state's medical professional organizations.
Doctors can't prescribe marijuana because it is illegal federally, but courts have upheld their right to talk about medicinal cannabis with patients and recommend its use.
When recommending cannabis, doctors must:
- establish a 'bona fide' relationship with the patient.
- certify the patient has a qualifying medical condition.
- review the patient's history in the state's controlled substances database.
- discuss the pros and cons of marijuana use.
